Medical statements

Your GP may not issue a medical certificate about your situation. That is so stipulated by the KNMG-guidelines. This is because a GP may not pass judgment on your fitness to do or not do certain things. These include working, driving, going to school, caring for children or being entitled to a parking permit, adapted housing or reimbursement for travel. We explain what you can do.

Why can't your own GP issue a medical certificate?

The KNMG believes it is important that your GP is concerned with your treatment and has a good relationship of trust with you. She wants to prevent your GP from getting into a conflict of interest that might make you unwilling to tell your GP everything, resulting in you receiving inferior care. In addition, your GP is often unaware of the specific requirements you have to meet in some cases to qualify for something.

What can you do?

Sometimes you do need an explanation. Here is what you can do in that case.

  • You can ask the authority if a self-declaration about your health status is sufficient, or if you can use a self-completed questionnaire, or if they can arrange for an independent doctor.
  • You can authorise the authority to ask your GP a number of concrete and factual questions, this written information will be accompanied by a bill in accordance with the applicable rates of medical information provision.
  • You can ask an independent doctor for an assessment. This doctor, with your permission, can also request information from your GP.

If desired, you can use the Refusal note as prepared by KNMG download and print.

Please note: Huisartsenpraktijk de Vecht does provide schengen declarations, declarations of benefits and DUO forms.
